My step-daughter has studied dance since she was about 7. She started with Irish dance and switched to ballet when she was 14. She has studied Ballet for 3 years.
Anyhow – she is in a ballet school and has performed in La Bayadere and The Nutcracker. In La Bayadere, she had a small solo. Her dream is to become a ballet dancer but I think that there are limited opportunities – they are there – but I think limited after college for a ballet dancer career. Plus she is 17 and I’d think that the dancers who are practically professional are just starting their real dance careers which I know are not long careers as dancers. Perhaps one could dance into the early 30s or a little longer.
I have told her that there seem to be more opportunities for dancers in small companies that perform contemporary dance. A career could last even longer if one was a choreographer or company founder etc.
But I think she hopes for a classical ballet career. I just need help understanding this world of dance and the reality of it. Thanks.
HEY! I am currently 14 years old (will be 15 in Jan.) and am wondering about dance as a sport.
(yes, sport )
I have about 6 years of experience in about every type of dance (from ballet and bellydance to flamenco!) from the age of about 4 to 10.
I have been swimming (very flexible, both splits, good shape) and have decided that I want to dance again.
Idk if it matters but I am rather thin and tall as well. 110 lbs and almost 5 foot 8.
I am open to new ideas of a cool dance type, like lyrical, partners or not.
I have always loved ballet but I think I’m too tall and I don’t know if I should try that again.
I want to try to audition for the Washington School of Ballet ( http://www.washingtonballet.org/the-school/ )
but I think that they are very serious (I am too, just not ballet as a career! ) and I may be too tall. Should I do any training this summer before trying out for any types of dance?
Does anyone have any good ideas for fun types of serious dance?
Oh, and also, what type of dance is this and are there any limitations to the dancers?
(skip around to see the type, I guess)
(I think it looks like lyrical but I’m not sure!!!)
(Also, how long does it take, with hard training, to be as good as the lead girl? The black one. Shes my friend. I promise I’m not racist!)
Please comment if you can’t see the vid! I will try to post a new link in "additional details" asap so please check back!

Is it normal for most dancers to have difficulty in adjusting to a different choreographer? I know that everyone has a different style of dancing (especially in Hip hop). Although I’ve been dancing for a few years I have a little bit of trouble adjusting to this choreographers different style of Hip Hop. And I also notice this with some other dancers too.
So I’m wondering if trying different styles of hip hop are difficult to adjust to for most dancers?
okay so dance is my passion and i absolutely love it ( specifically ballet and contemporary) however my parents dont see it as a career. do u get paid in a compony? my parents want me to be able to support myself and go to college majoring in business. that sounds good but i want to dance howeer i do want to make money and be successful and i am aware that the world of dance is very difficult to get into and become professional ( its so competitive) what should i do ? how can i a profession out of dance? and still be successful ?
owning a studio is a great idea but i feel thats more for retired dancers (something to do when im older) right now i want to be the one dancing

I’m 5′7, and have muscular arms (not super muscular) and have leg muscles and a 6 pack. I’m kind of buff but not really and recently I want to get into breakdancing. I practice martial arts (not the ones that are flashy, memorization of movements, and dancing types of martial arts) which shaped my body.
Am I (cap)able of starting breakdancing, or other type of dances related to hip-hop/clubbing dances? Are there actual classes that teaches those type of dances (especially in the Bay Area, San Francisco? Does Youtube have any videos that teaches it?
I believe my stature may affect how I dance, because most breakdancers/hip-hop dancers seem to be extremely in shape.
Hi, im on my friends yahoo answers account. anyways, i want to do dance in the school year. do u think 12 yrs old is too late to start (im a beginner)? Also, im kind of embarassed because im 5 feet 5 inches and i weigh 142 lbs. i feel so fat. i think i would be fine if i lost like 20 lbs, but its soo hard.
also, would it be too late if i was thinking of eventually dancing as a career when i got older?
the only thing that motivates me is looking at skinny dancers in my dance camp and wishing i looked like them.
oh, and just wondering, do most high schools have a dance team? and what would u need to know how to do?
